Iran calls for release of pilots captured in Qatar during West Asia war

Iranian authorities have urged for the release of three Iranian pilots, who were reportedly captured by Qatari forces during a recent Middle East conflict. The pilots were taken alive after their Su-24 fighter jets crashed, as per General Mohammad Bagherzadeh of the Iranian armed forces, according to Fars news agency. Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian have been held by Qatari forces for six months, he stated in a letter addressed to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Bagherzadeh emphasized that the pilots have been denied the opportunity to communicate with their families. Previously, Iran's army claimed to have recovered the body of Iranian pilot Majid Kazemi, who was killed in an attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar earlier this month. Iran had previously indicated that the remaining pilots were unaccounted for, though this news was not widely publicized at the time.

The Al Udeid base in Qatar serves as a forward operating location for US Central Command (CENTCOM) and its air forces and special operations units. Tensions between Iran and the United States escalated on February 28 when the US and Israel initiated strikes on Iran, which Iran retaliated against across the region. A ceasefire was reached in April, following nearly 40 days of combat, and a framework for peace negotiations was agreed upon in June.

However, these talks ultimately fell apart. Iran and the US have continued to engage in sporadic skirmishes, with most of the fighting occurring in southern Iran and near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire has been in effect since late July.
