Indonesia rescuers search for survivors as quake death toll rises to 38

MAUMERE, Indonesia - Rescue teams have been scouring the wreckage for survivors following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off Flores Island, killing at least 38 people and injuring 13, according to Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency. Suharyanto, the head of the agency, stated that two victims are in serious condition and that rescue efforts are being prioritized to reach those trapped in collapsed buildings.

Two helicopters and a plane have been deployed to assist in the rescue operation. European Union's Copernicus Earth observation satellites have offered their support for the search and rescue efforts, with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen expressing solidarity with Indonesia. Over 2,000 people have evacuated as a result of the quake.

Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university lecturer, recounted the terrifying experience, describing the earthquake as feeling like being on a trampoline. Landslides have complicated rescue efforts by blocking roads. Authorities have urged residents not to return to damaged buildings due to the risk of aftershocks. Despite a lifted tsunami warning, residents remain on high alert, remaining outside their homes as aftershocks continue.
