Indomitable spirit

Catherine Mary Burke, known for her indomitable spirit, battled breast cancer for over a decade until her passing on November 29, 2025, at the age of 67. Born with a "glass-half-full" attitude, Burke's positivity was a gift to her family, providing unwavering support through her cancer journey. Her husband, Patrick Burke, remembered their meeting in 1980 at an airport, with Burke arriving in Winnipeg to finish her agricultural degree after traveling from Saskatoon.

The couple married in 1982 and had three sons together. In 2016, Burke was diagnosed with breast cancer after a missed tumor was discovered during her mammogram. Burke endured a decade of aggressive treatments, including four major surgeries, seven chemotherapy regimens, 50 radiation sessions, and various medications, all while maintaining her signature positive disposition.

She became an advocate for better breast cancer screening policies in Manitoba, forming a strong advocacy team and collaborating with Dense Breasts Canada to inform women about their breast density following mammograms. Patrick Burke praised his wife's courage and determination, noting her unwavering strength in the face of adversity.
