India nabs Nigerian man over love scam

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force in India has apprehended a Nigerian man, Nwogu Osinachi, aged 37, in connection with a cyber fraud case. Osinachi was arrested on August 11 in Delhi's Kamal Vihar, Burari. According to the Times of India, the suspect, originally from Imo State, was sought in connection with FIR No. 33/2026 registered at the Madeyganj police station in Lucknow.

The victim, a resident of Daliganj, was reportedly defrauded of Rs 68 lakh (approximately N98.1m) by the accused, who allegedly used fake foreign identities to build relationships with victims. The fraudsters initially contacted the victim on Facebook as Doris William, a British citizen, and gradually gained their trust. The fraudsters then promised expensive gifts and foreign currency, leading the victim to believe that a parcel containing the gifts had been intercepted.

To further deceive the victim, the gang allegedly sent a fake RBS certificate purportedly issued in the United Kingdom. Osinachi allegedly admitted to carrying out the Rs68-lakh fraud with two associates, Uchenwa and Obäse Prosper. Police recovered 11 mobile phones, a laptop, four ATM cards, and 34 screenshots during the investigation.
