Independence Day 2026 LIVE: PM Modi extends wishes, remembers freedom fighters on I-Day, to address nation from Red Fort

India is commemorating its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the nation from the Red Fort. The festivities will include traditional ceremonies, a parade, and a special performance of Vande Mataram, which will be sung from the Red Fort for the first time. Around 27,000 attendees, including youth innovators, interns, entrepreneurs, and students, are expected to participate in the 80th Independence Day celebrations.

The celebrations have been enhanced with rigorous security measures, including a multi-layered anti-terror response plan and over 1,000 CCTV cameras equipped with AI-based video analytics. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced the commencement of metro services at 4 am, with trains running at a frequency of 30 minutes on all lines. Special pre-vended QR tickets have been provided to the Ministry of Defence for the movement of special guests and invitees.

The theme of this year's celebrations is "150 Years of Vande Mataram" and "Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047." The historic first event of Vande Mataram being sung from the Red Fort highlights the focus on the youth, with the Yuva Shakti theme being decided independently of recent student protests against the NEET paper leak.

Doors to the Red Fort will open at 6:30 am on August 15, with live coverage beginning at the same time on Doordarshan and HT India's YouTube channel. The celebrations may be marked by very light to light rainfall in the national capital, with a 70% probability of about 5 mm of rain between 4 am and 6 am.
