Finlay Tarling’s team withdraws from race following teen cyclist’s death in Portugal

The Finlay Tarling Cycling Team has decided to withdraw from the remaining stages of the Volta a Portugal in the wake of a tragic accident that claimed the life of their 19-year-old rider. Finlay Tarling, who was also the younger brother of Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Josh, was involved in a "serious accident" during the eighth stage of the 166.8km race from Melgaço to Fafe. The young cyclist was part of the NSN Development Team, having signed a two-year contract prior to the 2025 season.

NSN Development released a statement expressing their profound grief over the loss of Finlay. They announced that the team would continue in the Czech Tour and the Arctic Race of Norway, honoring Finlay's memory through his love for the sport. The statement also thanked the cycling community and beyond for their overwhelming support during this difficult time.

The Volta a Portugal organizers confirmed that Saturday's penultimate stage would proceed in an atmosphere of deep mourning, with tributes paid to Finlay before the start. They acknowledged the inherent risks in the sport but expressed their shock and sorrow at the magnitude of this tragedy. They noted that the event's main sponsors would cancel all planned activities for the final two days in honor of the fallen rider.

Cycling's main sponsor, Major Tiago Machado of the National Republican Guard (GNR), reported that the accident involved a collision with a light goods vehicle. The GNR was in charge of investigating the incident to establish the facts rigorously. As the race continues, it is clear that this is not the time for speculation, and the focus will be on sporting competition while paying respect to Finlay Tarling in his honor.
