Ex-Navy chief Marom: Police should handle unrest in West Bank, not drafted soldiers

Former Israel Navy commander Maj.-Gen. (res.) Eliezer Marom criticized the deployment of IDF soldiers to handle unrest in the West Bank village of Kusra, arguing that it is a "shocking incident" that tarnishes the reputation of the entire country. He emphasized that the police, not IDF soldiers, should handle such situations, stating that "the Border Police are designated to address these situations."

Marom also expressed concern that a small group of individuals are participating in actions that should not be tolerated and are acting against the law.

While acknowledging that a settlement enterprise has developed significantly in Judea and Samaria in recent years, Marom stressed that police officers are not trained to operate as police and that IDF soldiers are there to confront external enemies. He drew a parallel to the handling of haredi demonstrations in Bnei Brak, suggesting that the same approach should be taken in Kusra.

Marom also highlighted that one of the residents injured during the recent unrest was a US citizen, emphasizing the international aspect of the situation. He dismissed reports of Hamas rebuilding its capabilities, asserting that conditions are not approaching those that existed prior to October 7 and dismissing fears of another October 7 taking place.
