Eli Lilly’s Weight-Loss Pill Just Got Its First Foothold in Europe

Eli Lilly's weight-loss drug, Foundayo, has received regulatory approval in the United Kingdom, marking its first foothold in Europe. The drug, a non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet, was granted authorization by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. This approval allows Foundayo to be taken as a daily pill, without food or water restrictions, making it more convenient than other oral peptide alternatives.

Clinical data supports the approval, showing that participants on a 36 mg dose lost an average of 11.2% of their body weight, compared to 2.1% for those on a placebo. However, Foundayo is not yet available through the NHS in the UK, and its journey to the larger market depends on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to complete a cost-effectiveness study.

This approval places Eli Lilly in direct competition with Novo Nordisk's oral weight-loss drug, Wegovy, which was approved in the UK in June. Both companies will likely compete based on efficacy, tolerability, pricing, and supply. The approval is seen as a positive for Eli Lilly's long-term market leadership in the metabolic health sector, with a forward P/E ratio of 25.99x indicating investor confidence in its dual-engine growth narrative.

Investors should watch for the November 18 NICE payment ruling as a key driver for near-term trading direction.
