Dubai Customs foil attempt to smuggle more than 70 million cigarettes to Europe

Dubai Customs has successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle over 70 million cigarettes into a European nation. The illicit haul consisted of 360,500 cartons, spread across nine separate shipments. The contraband was discovered when officials realized the cargo did not match the information declared on the shipping documents. The seized cigarettes were found to be part of a larger scheme involving clothes as well.

Abdulla Alblooshi, director of Air Cargo Centres Management at Dubai Customs, explained that the investigation revealed a coordinated effort across three air cargo facilities. He emphasized that modern customs operations are not solely reliant on inspection but also on accurate risk assessment and anticipation of potential threats. This significant operation highlights Dubai Customs' proactive approach to combating smuggling and illicit trade.

The successful seizure of nearly seven tonnes of tobacco underscores the department's efficiency and readiness in addressing emerging smuggling techniques. It also underscores Dubai Customs' crucial role in safeguarding international supply chains and protecting against fraudulent activities. This enforcement action carries additional weight because the shipments were destined for a European market, not the local Dubai market.

Dubai Customs has been highly active in the first quarter of the year, conducting 182 seizures. Out of these, 161 were related to security concerns, while 21 were customs-related. These efforts further bolster Dubai's reputation as a secure and reliable hub for global trade and logistics.
