Drug-Driver Wrecks Torrevieja Restaurant Terrace

A driver faces significant repercussions after crashing her vehicle into a restaurant terrace in Torrevieja, subsequently testing positive for drugs. The incident occurred early Sunday morning near the intersection of Calle’s Joaquín Chapaprieta, San Pascual, and Apolo. The car veered off the road, crashing into the restaurant's outdoor area, destroying two stone planters and a significant portion of the wooden decking.

Miraculously, the establishment was closed at the time, and no customers were present on the terrace. The female driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained no injuries. Torrevieja Local Police responded to the scene, assisting the woman and arranging for the removal of the damaged vehicle. Drug and alcohol tests were conducted, with the latter revealing a positive drug test result.

The restaurant's owners discovered extensive damage to their premises, including scattered vehicle parts upon reopening the next morning. While repair costs are anticipated to be covered by insurance, the accident occurred during peak tourist season, a period crucial for the restaurant's revenue. The restaurant relies heavily on income from its outdoor tables.

The initial drug test must undergo laboratory verification. Unless authorities can prove that the substances impaired the woman's driving capabilities, the case is likely to be dealt with administratively, resulting in a fine of €1,000 and six points off her license. Torrevieja is home to approximately 600 licensed outdoor terraces, many situated near roads.

Over the years, several vehicles have crashed into customer areas, although no serious injuries have been reported.
