Douglass sets 50m freestyle world record at Pan Pacific

On August 15, American swimmer Kate Douglass reestablished the women's 50 meters freestyle world record at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California. She achieved a time of 23.49 seconds during the preliminary rounds. This was Douglass's second attempt at the record after her training partner and fellow American, Gretchen Walsh, had previously set the benchmark on June 28 with a time of 23.55 seconds.

Douglass and Walsh have been swapping the title this summer. During Saturday's preliminaries, Walsh clocked a second-fastest time of 23.78 seconds in her heat. The two swimmers are scheduled to compete once more in the evening final. Additionally, Douglass contributed to breaking the world record in the mixed 4x100 meters medley relay on the opening night of the championships, alongside Walsh, Van Mathias, and Will Modglin.

Douglass is a five-time Olympic medalist, and these championships serve as a significant early benchmark for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
