Dodgers Honoring Reggie Smith With Legends of Dodger Baseball Induction

The Los Angeles Dodgers will honor World Series champion switch-hitter Reggie Smith with a Legends of Dodger Baseball induction ceremony on Saturday. The Dodgers announced in February that Smith would be the 10th inductee into this prestigious program. His induction will precede the Dodgers' third of four games against the Milwaukee Brewers at Dodger Stadium.

Smith expressed his deep appreciation for the recognition, acknowledging the caliber of both players and men who have worn the Dodger uniform. He stated that being selected is a humbling experience, especially considering his upbringing in the Los Angeles area.

Smith played for the Dodgers from 1976 to 1981, signing with the team in a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers acquired him along with catcher Joe Ferguson, outfielder Bob Detherage, and minor league infielder/outfielder Freddie Tisdale. Prior to joining the Dodgers, Smith had already earned four All-Star selections while playing for the Boston Red Sox and Cardinals. He also won the American League Gold Glove with the Red Sox in 1968 and was named Boston's Most Valuable Player in 1971.

During his tenure with the Dodgers, Smith contributed to three World Series appearances, ultimately leading the team to their first World Series title since 1965 in 1981. The Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in that series, marking a significant victory in their history. After retiring from playing in 1982, Smith continued to be involved with the Dodgers organization, beginning as a minor league coordinator before becoming a hitting coach and first base coach from 1994 to 1998.
