Detectives recover M16 rifle linked to four murders in Isiolo, Meru

Nairobi, Kenya, August 15 — Authorities are probing whether an M16 rifle recovered in Isiolo is linked to four murders in Isiolo and Meru counties over the past 18 months. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated the weapon was seized during a coordinated multi-agency operation in Kakili, Burat Location, where it was loaded with five rounds.

The operation involved police, National Police Reservists, and National Government Administration Officers. The DCI believes the rifle belongs to bandit Aloise Lochuchu, charged with armed robbery. While investigators cannot confirm if the firearm was used in the killings, the recovery provides a forensic lead. The four cases include murders in Maili Tatu (January 26, 2025), Isiolo town (July 20, 2025), Sakama Bar (December 24, 2025), and Leparua (February 18, 2026).

DCI spokesperson noted the recovery "has opened a can of worms," as detectives determine the weapon's role and if it was used in other crimes. The rifle is now at Isiolo Police Station and will undergo ballistic examination at the National Forensic Laboratory to link any crime scene evidence to it.
