Dafeamekpor defends Ayine’s handling of Aksa case, faults past AGs

Majority Chief Whip Dafeamekpor has defended Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr Dominic Ayine's approach to the Aksa power deal bribery scandal. He urged critics to allow the current investigation to proceed without partisan distractions. According to Dafeamekpor, previous administrations failed to act decisively on the matter, pointing to the resignation of former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director Asante Kwaku Berko during Gloria Akuffo's tenure as Attorney-General.

No action was taken by Akuffo or her deputy, Godfred Dame, who later served as Attorney-General from 2021 to 2024. Dafeamekpor said the current administration's decision to revisit the matter should be welcomed. He urged critics to give Dr Ayine a chance to complete the process, adding that the focus should be on the circumstances surrounding the transaction and alleged corruption, rather than the power plant's performance.

The Aksa deal has been under scrutiny following US criminal prosecution of Berko over bribery allegations, which he denies and is subject to the US judicial process.
