Cyclist, 19, dies during Volta a Portugal after collision with vehicle

Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British cyclist, lost his life in a tragic accident during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal. The collision occurred with a light goods vehicle, and Major Tiago Machado of the National Republican Guard confirmed the incident. Authorities are now conducting an investigation into the matter.

Tarling, the younger brother of fellow cyclist Josh, was representing Great Britain's NSN Development Team when the accident took place. The 166.8-kilometre race route, which extended from Melgaco to Fafe, was the scene of the fatal collision. NSN Development Team released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over Tarling's passing, describing him as a beloved member of their team, as well as a son, brother, and friend.

Cycling enthusiasts and organizers from the race and the Portuguese Cycling Federation sent heartfelt condolences to Tarling's family, his teammates, the NSN Development Team, and all of his friends and loved ones. They announced that the race had been halted, and the scheduled podium ceremony would not occur, as a sign of respect and mourning.

Portuguese President António José Seguro acknowledged that Tarling's death had deeply impacted not only the cycling community but also the entire nation. British Cycling's performance director, Stephen Park, also expressed profound sadness, stating that Tarling was a talented rider with a promising future ahead of him. He described him as a loyal teammate and an all-around brilliant young man, and extended deepest sympathies to his parents and brother, Josh, during this difficult time.
