‘Coffee got us married’: Ajay Ahuja’s wife Alka reveals what Operation Safed Sagar got right

Operation Safed Sagar, a Netflix series based on the Indian Air Force's role in the 1999 Kargil War, has brought renewed attention to the lives of the officers who fought in the conflict. Among these stories is that of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who tragically lost his life during the war. His wife, Alka Ahuja, has spoken about the series and revealed how many of its personal scenes mirror their real-life experiences.

Among the scenes that resonated with viewers is the one where Ajay's fellow pilots jokingly ask if he decided to marry Alka because she could make excellent coffee very quickly. In reality, Ajay did confirm this in the series. He explained that marrying Alka would allow them to spend more time together. Alka confirmed that this story was indeed true, recounting how Ajay would visit her home frequently during their courtship, making coffee for his parents which often took him an hour.

However, when he visited her home, his wife made coffee in just ten minutes, impressing him so much that he remarked, "Coffee got us married."

Another scene depicted Ajay's fellow officers coming over to his home to eat Alka's speciality cuisine. Alka confirmed that this scene was rooted in reality, explaining that the bachelors enjoyed helping prepare the food, even chopping vegetables and making coffee. The chaotic kitchen after such gatherings was also an accurate depiction of their home life.

A significant detail in the series is the delivery of a Maruti Zen car to Alka after Ajay's death. Alka confirmed that this event truly occurred. Initially, she was unsure how she would use the car since she didn't know how to drive. However, she eventually decided to keep it as a last gift from Ajay, using it for many years before eventually replacing it after 14 years.

The series also shows Alka's inability to say goodbye to Ajay before he left for Srinagar. Alka confirmed that this scene was accurate, explaining that she packed his luggage while he was away.
