Chang’aa crackdown intensifies in Laikipia as police seize 1,260 litres of illicit brew

In Laikipia County, Kenya, authorities intensified their crackdown on illicit brews as police confiscated about 1,260 litres of Chang’aa during a raid on a suspected brewing facility. The operation, conducted by officers from Nanyuki Police Station, was prompted by tips from the public who alerted authorities about an alleged illegal brewing operation located near the Kangaitha River.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reported that the raid resulted in the seizure of 63 plastic containers, each holding 20 litres of illicit alcohol, totaling an approximate 1,260 litres of Chang’aa.

The intensified efforts against illicit brews are part of a broader strategy by security agencies to curb the production and distribution of these substances, which authorities warn continue to endanger public health and safety. The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide information to assist in identifying and disrupting illegal brewing operations.

Such community cooperation is crucial as authorities aim to tackle the production and distribution of illicit alcohol at its source across the country.

Following this raid, police also recovered an additional 2,620 litres of illicit brew and dismantled a distillation operation on the previous day, on August 13, 2026. This action underscores the ongoing commitment of the security forces and local communities to work together in creating safer and healthier environments by combating the illicit alcohol trade.
