Campbell still trying to find answers for Lions offensive line

After a dozen days of training camp and one preseason game, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell is still searching for answers regarding the offensive line starters. During a loss to Cincinnati on Thursday, Campbell observed the team's performance and expressed his satisfaction with their overall execution. He highlighted the effectiveness of their fundamentals when they were "all together doing it right."

Despite most starters not playing, including left tackle Penei Sewell, Campbell had a chance to assess right tackle Blake Miller and center Seth McLaughlin, both of whom started the game. Throughout the camp, Campbell has been highly optimistic about Miller, a first-round pick, praising his consistency and demeanor. McLaughlin, a second-year offensive lineman who has yet to play in an NFL game, took over after Cade Mays sustained a wrist injury last week and will be out for an extended period. Michael Niese stepped in later in the game, filling in as the starting center.

Veteran center Juice Scruggs, who had been sidelined due to a soft tissue injury, is also in contention for a starting role. Campbell, addressing Scruggs' abilities, noted that the veteran's strength lies in playing low, being quick and sharp at the second level. He also commended McLaughlin's performance, stating that although he is not the largest player, he excels in playing low, possesses quickness and sharpness, and performs admirably at the second level.

Additionally, Campbell lauded Christian Mahogany's physical presence and power during the pass game, though he acknowledged that Mahogany needs to improve his consistency.

With two preseason games left, Campbell is still in the process of identifying the five best starters. He emphasized that this is an ongoing battle.
