Bonnie Tyler fans line the streets of a Welsh village as her coffin is brought home

Fans of singer Bonnie Tyler gathered in Mumbles, Wales, as her hearse carrying her coffin traveled along the streets of the seaside village on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, en route to her former home. The Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, passed away on July 8 at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal.

Tyler gained worldwide fame with her 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which topped charts in Britain and the United States and has amassed over 1 billion streams, including during recent solar eclipses. Known for other hits like "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out For a Hero," Tyler was hospitalized in May in Faro for emergency intestinal surgery.

Locals and fans from the UK and beyond lined the streets to pay their respects, with many waiting outside her former residence or leaving floral tributes. Carys Edwards, 18, expressed the profound impact Tyler had on Welsh music, noting, "She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales; we loved her a lot."

Born in Skewen, Wales, Tyler grew up with three sisters and two brothers in public housing with an outside toilet. She earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, placing 19th. Tyler was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for her contributions to music by Queen Elizabeth II.
