At Least 38 Dead as 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Indonesia

The European Commission is prepared to deploy satellite imagery from its Copernicus program to aid Indonesian search and rescue efforts following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country, according to President Ursula von der Leyen. In a post on the social media platform X, von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Indonesia, stating, "Indonesia, we stand with you."

Copernicus is a satellite observation system capable of providing mapping services that can assist in search operations and evaluating damage. At least 38 individuals have lost their lives since the powerful quake hit the island of Flores, as reported by the BBC based on a press conference by Indonesia's disaster response agency.

Ongoing rescue operations are taking place. Additionally, the foreign ministries of Italy, Greece, and Estonia, along with officials, have expressed support for Indonesia through messages on X. Earlier this week, the Commission allocated €2.1 million for assistance in Colombia and to utilize the Copernicus system in response to a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the nation.
