At least 2 dead after magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes off Indonesia

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia early Saturday, resulting in at least two deaths and one injury, according to the authorities. The disaster mitigation agency BNPB reported that dozens of aftershocks followed the initial quake. Parts of a building collapsed in Maumere, a port city in Sikka Regency on Flores Island, causing people to flee in panic.

Buildings and houses were damaged across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi. Residents reported shaking that lasted around a minute. The tsunami warning was lifted about three hours after the earthquake, though waves of less than 1 meter were recorded in several areas. The quake was initially recorded at a depth of 15km at 4.58am, with several subsequent aftershocks.

Australia's tsunami warning center confirmed that the undersea earthquake posed no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands, or territories.
