Asia Intelligence Brief August 15, 2026: An Answer Delivered On Iturup

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iturup, one of the disputed Kuril Islands claimed by Japan, on Thursday. It marked his first visit to the island chain as president, while his predecessor Dmitry Medvedev had previously visited in 2010. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan called the visit "absolutely unacceptable" and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned Russia's ambassador in protest.

Russia's embassy in Japan described Tokyo's reaction as "unfounded" and said the president's travels are "sovereign decisions" not subject to foreign discussion.

Analysts suggest the visit may be part of the Kremlin's response to Japan's latest defence white paper, which has drawn formal protests from South Korea and China. The island of Iturup, the largest of the four southern Kuril Islands, was seized by the Soviet Union in the final days of World War II. Japan renounced all claims to the islands in the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco but never recognized Soviet sovereignty over them. Despite decades of negotiation, no peace treaty has been signed.

Meanwhile, India has set a target of $1 trillion in exports, with overseas shipments rising 15% in the first four months of the year. The country's growth and price pressure are appearing together. As the export drive competes for shelf space in European and North American markets, China's domestically-built C919 airliner has made its debut on an international commercial route, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese aviation industry.
