Arul must step out of Loke’s shadow as Negeri Sembilan DAP chief

J Arul Kumar, a four-term Nilai assemblyman, recently assumed the role of Negeri Sembilan DAP chief, succeeding Loke Siew Fook after Loke's resignation. Loke, who had led the state chapter for over two decades, had become synonymous with the DAP in Negeri Sembilan. Political analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri of Global Asia Consulting pointed out that Arul's primary challenge lies in distancing himself from Loke's shadow and establishing his own authority.

As one of the five national DAP vice-chairmen, Arul's appointment could potentially propel him further up the ranks of the party. However, if he fails, political rivals may exploit the situation to question the party's multiracialism. The Negeri Sembilan DAP committee unanimously elected Arul as its new chairman on August 10, replacing Loke, who resigned in the aftermath of his defeat in the state election.

Loke had presided over the DAP's rise in Negeri Sembilan, increasing its representation in the state assembly from two seats in 2004 to a peak of 11 in the 2023 state election, though they only managed to retain nine seats in the recent polls. Lau Zhe Wei of the International Islamic University Malaysia suggested that Arul's position within the party could potentially lead to his appointment as the opposition leader in the Negeri Sembilan legislative assembly.

Nevertheless, he did not view Arul's appointment as having a significant impact, emphasizing that political influence within the DAP primarily stems from the central leadership rather than the state level. Universiti Utara Malaysia's Chin Yee Mun concurred, stating that Loke would continue to wield influence over Negeri Sembilan DAP due to his role as party secretary-general.
