AMCU Labour Party takes centre stage ahead of local elections

Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and its Labour Party are gaining prominence. Registered with the Electoral Commission of South Africa in March 2024, the party made its political debut by winning its first local government by-election at Thabazimbi Local Municipality in Limpopo nine months later.

AMCU president and interim Labour Party leader, Joseph Mathunjwa, explained that the party's formation stemmed from a perceived failure of the political system and opposition parties. Mathunjwa emphasized that the Labour Party was established to fight for the working class's rights and advocate for a living wage. The party's entry into the political scene comes shortly after the 14th Marikana massacre commemoration, a stark reminder of the struggles faced by workers and their families.

The Labour Party's formation was a result of years of deliberations within AMCU, with the goal of making a difference in the broader social and economic realities faced by South Africans.
