Alaves, Sevilla triumph as new La Liga season begins

La Liga's new 2026/2027 season commenced with Alaves and Sevilla securing winning starts in their opening matches. On Saturday, Alaves triumphed 3-0 over Getafe despite the latter fielding just 10 players following Kiko Femenia's red card in the first half. Nahuel Tenaglia put Alaves ahead after 73 minutes, and Mariano added a crucial second in added time after being set up by Kiko.

Mikel Rodriguez sealed the victory with a third goal for Alaves. Earlier, Sevilla faced a tough challenge against Rayo Vallecano. Starting poorly, they conceded early to Alvaro Garcia but rallied back, with Jon Guridi equalizing from the penalty spot after Luis Garcia's initial miss. Sevilla's Kike Salas received a second yellow card in stoppage time, but Robbie Ure's late goal secured a 2-1 win for Sevilla.

The new season will see Villarreal take on promoted Racing Santander on Sunday, while Atletico Madrid begin their campaign at home against Malaga on Wednesday. Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid and champions Barcelona are set to face Espanyel and Elche, respectively, in their first matches.
