6.9 Sumatra earthquake felt in Penang, no damage reported

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck North Sumatra, Indonesia at 6:54 pm today. The epicenter was located 2.9 degrees north and 98.8 degrees east at a depth of 154 kilometers. Malaysian authorities reported that the quake was felt across the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, including Penang. The Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed the tremors with five reports received by authorities in the region.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department also received five reports, four from Peninsular Malaysia's northeastern and southeastern districts, and one from Seberang Perai. No injuries or damage have been reported in Penang following the earthquake.
