However, McCarthy suffered a knee injury during his rookie year and performed poorly in his debut season, culminating in a subpar passer rating. The Vikings opted to retain Murray, whose performance has since eclipsed McCarthy's.

Despite McCarthy's expressed desire to stay with the Vikings, many believe he will be traded. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report has suggested the San Francisco 49ers as a potential destination for McCarthy. Knox argues that the 49ers, devoid of an aging star quarterback, could provide McCarthy with an opportunity to regain his status as Brock Purdy's backup, akin to Mac Jones' experience in San Francisco last season.

Jones, who spent two years in San Francisco before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks for a substantial deal, is expected to secure a starting role in the offseason.

The 49ers have a history of rehabilitating quarterbacks, having signed Sam Darnold to reinforce Purdy in 2023, who subsequently became the starting quarterback in Minnesota the following year. Darnold subsequently signed a lucrative contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Similarly, Jones was acquired by the 49ers at a reasonable price, excelling in his role behind Purdy.

Given McCarthy's youth at 23, the 49ers could offer him a platform to learn under one of the NFL's premier offensive minds for a season or two, potentially positioning him as a viable starter in 2027 or 2028.
