(2nd LD) Lee proposes dialogue with N. Korea to officially end Korean War, halt Pyongyang's nuclear program

President Lee Jae Myung proposed dialogue between North and South Korea on Aug. 15 to end the Korean War and address Pyongyang's nuclear program, during his speech at a ceremony marking the 81st Liberation Day. The president pledged to pursue a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the need to reduce hostility and improve perceptions, norms, and systems.

Lee stressed the importance of establishing a multilayered security system to control tensions and prevent crises, as well as creating a stable peninsula to contribute to stability and cooperation in Northeast Asia. The president also highlighted active shuttle diplomacy between South Korea and Japan, expressing hope to open a new era of peace and prosperity.

Additionally, Lee pledged support for young people and a sturdy ladder of opportunities, while investigating and holding accountable those who accumulated unjust assets during Japan's colonial rule of Korea.
