180,000 cases of personal info leaked from Sogang University; ex-President Park believed to be affected

Sogang University in Seoul fell victim to a cyberattack, resulting in the leak of approximately 180,000 personal records, including those of students, graduates, faculty members, and other affiliated individuals, officials announced on Saturday. The former President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, is suspected to be among those whose data was compromised.

The university disclosed that the breach occurred due to an unidentified external assault on its integrated login account information system. The compromised information encompasses student identification numbers, names, affiliations, mobile phone numbers, and passwords.

The university became aware of the attack on Friday, three days after it took place. In response, the institution promptly blocked the affected IP address, implemented emergency safeguards, and promptly informed both the Personal Information Protection Commission and the education ministry about the security incident. Emergency response measures were subsequently completed, and university officials are now conducting a thorough investigation to identify vulnerable points within the internal server.

The university is collaborating with an external cybersecurity firm to implement measures aimed at preventing further damage, which encompasses enhancing the monitoring system.

The former President Park Geun-hye is believed to have her personal data among the leaked information. The university is diligently working to mitigate the impact of the security breach and restore the integrity of its data systems.
