Wangchuk calls for ‘2nd Independence movement’

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has urged India to embark on a "peaceful revolution" to rethink its political leadership, warning that the nation risks falling behind its neighbours if current trends continue. In a video message ahead of Independence Day, Wangchuk called for selfless, fearless individuals with character and substance to help shape the country's future.

He expressed concern over India's economic position, stating that the country could not maintain its status as a developed nation in 2047 if its per capita GDP continues its downward trajectory. Wangchuk urged citizens to initiate what he termed as "India's second Independence movement," emphasizing that the state of education is crucial to the country's progress.

He criticized the education ministry for its lack of change, even after the resignation of the Education Minister, and linked the country's future to its education system. Wangchuk also highlighted the suppression of dissent under different governments, regardless of political affiliations, and expressed alarm at the prevalence of criminal cases among elected representatives.

Despite focusing on political leadership, Wangchuk emphasized that he was not targeting any specific political party or the opposition, but rather the nation as a whole. He invited citizens from across India to propose names of selfless, fearless individuals with character and substance for building a new map of the country, urging them to suggest at least one such name during the Independence Day celebrations.
