Violence, vote-buying erode confidence in elections – NOA

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has highlighted several issues that are contributing to a declining trust in the Nigerian electoral process. These factors include election violence, misinformation, vote-buying, and a growing perception among some citizens, especially young Nigerians, that their votes do not make a meaningful difference.

Olukemi Afolayan, Director of Civic, Values and Democracy Education at the NOA, emphasized this concern during a roundtable discussion titled "Reclaiming Our Vote: Enfranchising a New Generation of Voters." She stated that restoring citizens' confidence in the democratic process is crucial to reversing voter apathy and promoting greater participation in elections.

Afolayan described young Nigerians as critical stakeholders in the country's democratic development, given Nigeria's youthful population and the importance of their participation in shaping the nation's future. To enfranchise a new generation of voters, she stressed the need to provide them with civic education and reorient their values, ensuring they understand both their rights and responsibilities.

Adebanjo, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Foundation for Social Justice, noted that democracy should ultimately lead to improved living conditions and greater opportunities for citizens. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, concerns over voter apathy, declining trust, and challenges affecting citizens' participation remain high.
