US shifts Iran war goal, says cheaper oil for Americans is top priority

The US has shifted its primary objective in the Iran war to focus on keeping petrol prices low for American consumers, according to Vice President J.D. Vance. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that new economic sanctions aimed at wearing down Tehran are expected in the near future. This shift in priorities comes after Iran successfully shut down the Strait of Hormuz, which became the critical fuel supply conduit following the war launched by US President Donald Trump and Israel in late February.

The war's unpopularity among Americans and the approaching midterm elections have prompted Trump's administration to prioritize economic pressure on Iran. Vance stated that achieving cheap oil and gas prices for Americans is goal number one, with preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon as the secondary objective. The administration is reportedly low-keying diplomacy efforts in favor of economic measures, such as blocking Iranian ports and preventing oil sales, as they hope economic suffering will force Iran to yield.

Iran has presented a list of conditions for reopening the strait, which the US is unlikely to accept, including an end to the war, lifting the US blockade, ending sanctions, releasing frozen assets, and compensating for wartime damage.
