US says dozens of countries helped China dodge Trump’s tariffs

A White House report revealed that over 40 countries assisted China in evading US tariffs by rerouting exports through nations with lower import duties. These countries include Canada, India, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea, according to the White House's assessment. The practice, known as transshipping, allows China to circumvent tariffs by moving goods through third-party nations, hiding the true origin of the products.

This maneuver, described as "fraud cloaked in paperwork," has allegedly cost American jobs and billions in revenue. A Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington dismissed the accusations, stating that trade wars have no winners and opposing the US tariff measures. The report comes ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in September.

China is estimated to have moved between $30 billion and $300 billion in goods through lower-tariff countries. The White House claims it has employed AI tools to combat transshipping. The report highlights the potential impact on US bargaining power during the Trump-Xi meeting, as it could strengthen Washington's position by emphasizing China's indirect access to the US market through third-country routing.
