US raises pressure on EU to 'deliver' on non-tariff trade commitments

The United States has pressed the European Union to strengthen its commitment to non-tariff trade agreements, according to a post by Ambassador Andrew Puzder on X. The EU had pledged during trade talks with US President Donald Trump in July 2025 not to allow laws related to corporate sustainability to hinder transatlantic trade.

Puzder argued that EU laws requiring large companies to disclose their environmental and social impact, including supply chain conditions, could be detrimental to American businesses and workers. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive are cited as potential barriers.

Puzder urged the EU to fulfill its commitments, as Washington expects joint statements on non-tariff barriers in the autumn. The EU has already made some concessions, such as scaling back its corporate sustainability rules last year due to pushback from businesses and governments, including the US and Qatar.
