US missionary released following kidnap in Niger, Christian group says

Kevin Rideout, an American missionary and pilot, has been released after being kidnapped in Niger more than nine months ago, according to SIM International, the Christian organization he worked for. Rideout was taken captive outside his home in Niamey, Niger's capital, in October 2022. He was reportedly in good health and under the care of US officials when SIM International announced his release on Friday.

The circumstances surrounding his release and the identity of his captors remain unclear. Rideout was reportedly taken to the western Tillaberi region, an area notorious for militant activity, as indicated by diplomatic sources cited by Reuters. There have been concerns that Rideout may have been taken by militant groups such as Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an affiliate of al-Qaeda, which has been linked to attacks in the region.

Since Rideout's kidnapping, the US has warned its citizens against traveling to Niger due to heightened terrorism risks, crime, and civil unrest. Rideout, who had been working in Niger as a Christian missionary for 19 years, is set to be reunited with his family, including his wife, children, and extended relatives. SIM International expressed relief and gratitude for Rideout's safe return and requested privacy as they reconnect.

The release of Rideout occurs amid ongoing terror attacks in several West African and Sahel countries, including Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria, which have been grappling with violence for over a decade. This violence has resulted in thousands of deaths and contributed to regional destabilization, with military takeovers further complicating the situation.
