UK firefighters ‘under pressure’ as multiple blazes rage

British firefighters faced intense pressure while battling multiple wildfires in central England, amid soaring temperatures and drought conditions, according to the head of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). Stourbridge, a town in the West Midlands region, bore the brunt of the blazes, forcing residents to evacuate and leading to several injuries due to smoke inhalation.

Three firefighters were hospitalized while fighting a blaze near Birmingham on the UK's hottest day of the year so far. The NFCC chief, Phil Garrigan, stressed that firefighters have been on the front lines of climate change for years, and are doing their best to protect communities and properties. The West Midlands region, along with nearly three-quarters of England, was in drought after weeks of extreme heat and little rainfall, heightening the risk of fires.

Emergency services reported that at least six properties were affected by the fires, with some ignited deliberately in grasslands before spreading. West Midlands Fire Service chief fire officer Simon Tuhill described it as one of the most significant incidents his team had ever attended, attributing the rapid spread to tinder-dry conditions.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed dismay at the homes and communities hit by fires across the country during a heatwave. Fire chiefs appealed to the government to increase investment to keep pace with the growing risks of wildfires, warning that the risk is growing faster than their collective capacity to respond.
