Tolerance’s Nosedive Plunge

The ministry expressed disapproval of the religious animosity that fueled the confrontation, urging all Ghanaians to reflect on the importance of interfaith harmony. The country has not experienced such levels of intolerance before, and the recent reaction to a statement made by Reverend Owusu Bempah in 2019 should serve as a cautionary tale.

Speculations on social media have circulated regarding the suspect's political affiliation, with claims that he is a high-ranking National Democratic Congress (NDC) member. This speculation, if true, could lead to selective application of the law, further eroding public confidence in the government. Political parties in every state agency, including security segments, are involved in the dissemination of such narratives, which are detrimental to the country's security climate.

The matter at hand highlights the dangers of unguarded utterances about religious sensitivities. When not handled properly, such incidents can quickly spiral out of control and lead to avoidable consequences. The few individuals who seem to benefit from the current situation are selfish and must be stopped. They do not represent the Christian and Islamic faiths, which both emphasize peace and harmony. Leaders from both faiths are called upon to condemn those sowing the seeds of intolerance through reckless comments and name-calling. It is essential that the police, in the case under review, can carry out their duties without political interference.

Only then can we avoid the slippery slope of intolerance and maintain the peace and stability that our nation deserves.
