Those arrested over alleged inciteful comments should have been held for 48 hours – Afriyie Ankrah

Presidential Envoy Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has called for more stringent measures against those involved in incidents that could incite religious tensions in Ghana. Commending the arrest of suspects in connection with a recent incident involving a pastor, Mr. Ankrah contended that suspects should have been held in custody for a minimum of 48 hours to serve as a deterrent to others.

Speaking at a meeting with religious leaders at the Police Headquarters, he emphasized that apologies from individuals involved should not be the sole response to incidents capable of threatening religious harmony. Mr. Ankrah argued that stronger measures would send a clear message that acts capable of fueling religious discord would not be accepted.

He also urged the police to handle religious-related cases without bias or political influence, stressing that the law must be applied equally to all parties, irrespective of their religious or political backgrounds. Maintaining religious harmony, he stated, necessitates a firm yet fair approach to incidents that have the potential to create tension among Ghana’s diverse religious communities.
