원주시, ‘강원 글로벌산업통상기구’ 유치 나서…“도내 수출 거점”

Gangwon Province is seeking to establish the 'Gangwon Global Industry and Customs Union', with Wonju City actively chasing after the opportunity. The city announced on the 14th via a press release that the 'Gangwon Global Industry and Customs Union', being proposed by Gangwon Province, should be installed in Wonju. The city further noted that installing a customs organization in the largest export gateway of Gangwon Province would effectively support outbound businesses in acquiring overseas markets, ultimately enhancing the province's export competitiveness.

Gangwon Province aimed to launch the global industry and customs union in Gangwon in January of next year, in line with the pledge made by the Gangwon Province governor. The organization is expected to handle export support for local businesses, global marketing, and foreign promotion duties. Wonju City highlighted its strong position as the province's largest export gateway, accounting for approximately 40% of Gangwon Province's total exports valued at $30.6 billion as of 2025.

Tourism, including K-pop products and food exports, is a major contributor to Wonju's competitive advantage, which is bolstered by the city's diverse support systems for exporting companies. Installing the customs organization in the region would enable more localized, demand-driven assistance, moving away from a traditional supplier-centric approach.
