South Africa: Why Do Joburg's Taps Keep Running Dry?

The city of Johannesburg, South Africa, is grappling with a severe water crisis that has left many residents without running taps for extended periods. Poor management and frequent disruptions to the water supply system are to blame, according to the Melville Residents Association (MRA). Residents of Melville have endured over 50 days without water this year, and the MRA states that families are now forced to rely on expensive water tankers to meet their basic needs.

Johannesburg Water, the city's primary water provider, attributes the outages to a complex network that is sensitive to mechanical, electrical, and supply disruptions. Recent failures at the Crosby Pump Station and other areas have compounded the problem. The MRA notes that despite these consistent outages, residents are still being billed at increasingly high rates, while the city employs contractors to disconnect water services.

Long-term solutions are being implemented, including new reservoirs and repairs to reservoirs, but these measures may take time to fully resolve the issue. The Gauteng Water Security Dashboard reported 50,536 water pipe leaks between June 2025 and June 2026, with Johannesburg losing over 207-billion liters of water in the 2025 financial year alone. The Auditor-General's report for 2024/25 highlights inadequate maintenance planning, execution, and oversight as key contributors to the ongoing water crisis.
