Son Heung-min's LAFC eliminated from Leagues Cup tournament

Son Heung-min and his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) have been eliminated from the Leagues Cup tournament. After the opening phase concluded, LAFC found themselves in fifth place, as only the top four teams advanced to the knockout round. The Leagues Cup involves 36 teams from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX, with each side playing three matches against opponents from the other league.

The top two teams from each group proceeded to the quarterfinals. LAFC had secured third place with seven points when they wrapped up their opening phase on Wednesday, following a 5-3 shootout victory over Club Queretaro, a 5-4 penalty win against Chivas de Guadalajara, and a 1-0 win over Toluca FC. The regulations awarded three points for a regulation win, two points for a shootout victory, and one point for a shootout loss.

Austin FC and Chicago Fire FC, both with six points, managed to win their final games on Thursday, pushing LAFC out of the top four. Columbus Crew and Real Salt Lake secured the final two spots in the knockout tournament.
