SK Group chairman again appeals divorce suit to Supreme Court

SEOUL, Aug. 15 (Yonhap) -- Chairman of SK Group, Chey Tae-won, has once more petitioned to the Supreme Court regarding the recent decision demanding he settle a sum of 944 billion won (US$668 million) in property division to his ex-wife, Roh Soh-yeong, according to sources. In July, the Seoul High Court issued this ruling following a re-examination by the Supreme Court in October of the previous year, while resolving the divorce and Chey's monthly alimony payment of 2 billion won to Roh, the granddaughter of the former President Roh Tae-woo.

The revised amount was less than the initial 1.38 trillion won that the court had mandated in 2024. As the Supreme Court deliberates whether a lower court misapplied legal principles, legal experts assert the likelihood of the ruling being overturned is slim, as the case was already reviewed during its return to the lower court in October of the previous year.

Chey initiated the divorce proceedings in 2017 following his admission in 2015 of an affair and a child with his lover. Chey and Roh were wed in 1988 and have three offspring together.
