Siddapur village says no to Hyderabad’s waste, rises in protest

Siddapur village in Kothur mandal of Ranga Reddy district has refused to accept Hyderabad’s new waste processing facility, escalating their protest against the project. The Eco Town facility, aimed at promoting circular economy through solid waste management and waste-to-energy plants, was announced in July 2026. Protests began even before the government issued orders for the project, with the villagers organizing 'Chalo Collectorate' protests, submitting representations, and holding a sit-in at the Tehsildar’s office.

A senior village resident, Sri Charan Chari, expressed concerns that the solid waste treatment facility could encompass all the land acquired back in 2021, when the Industrial Park proposal was initially mooted. The villagers fear that industries will be relocated, and that the Eco Town project would expand to cover the remaining land acquired.

The Central Pollution Control Board introduced the 'Blue Category' for industries, including waste management and waste-to-energy plants, but the villagers remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the promised solutions. They express concern over the potential impact on real estate values and the existing water reservoir, which could be affected by the waste processing facility.

Despite GHMC authorities’ assurances, the villagers remain wary, as the Jawahar Nagar facility still causes severe air and water pollution in the surrounding area.
