Shubman Gill says 'huge honour' to lead India in 600th Test

Shubman Gill expressed immense pride in leading India for their 600th Test match against Sri Lanka on August 16. This milestone matches only England and Australia in the number of Tests played by a nation. The significance is further amplified by it coinciding with India's Independence Day, commemorating their liberation from British rule in 1947.

Gill, speaking to the media in Galle, stated that captaining India in this historic Test is a "huge honour" and that having it on Independence Day makes it even more special. He emphasized the importance of winning this series, as it could propel India to the World Test Championship final next year, where they currently hold the fifth position, one place above Sri Lanka.

India, under the captaincy of Gill, have won eight and lost 10 of their 20 Tests under coach Gautam Gambhir. Their performance under Gambhir has led them to fifth in the World Test Championship standings. Gill expressed satisfaction with the team's progress over the past year, noting their aim to secure six or seven wins out of their next nine Tests to achieve their goal.

Injuries have impacted both teams' line-ups. For India, Sai Sudharsan is absent, while Devdutt Padikkal will replace Devdutt Padikkal in the top order. Sri Lanka, too, face challenges with openers Pathum Nissanka and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis out due to injuries, with Niroshan Dickwella returning to the Test side after a long absence.
