Seven workers killed, 19 rescued in India tunnel accident

At least seven workers lost their lives and thirteen were injured when a landslide inundated a tunnel under construction in north India, officials announced on Friday. The catastrophe unfolded late Thursday in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, where construction was underway for a state-run hydropower project. At least three workers remain unaccounted for, while nineteen were rescued from the site belonging to the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation.

Local authorities released videos depicting rescue teams using headlamps and inflatable rafts to navigate the waterlogged tunnel section. Uttarakhand has been experiencing intense monsoon rains in recent days. Construction site accidents are not uncommon in India, but ecologists argue that excessive developmental projects have resulted in a surge of disasters in the delicate Himalayan terrain.

Last month, twenty individuals working on a tunnel for another state-operated hydroelectric project met their demise in the remote northeastern state of Sikkim. In 2023, forty-one workers were rescued after being trapped for seventeen days inside a collapsing tunnel in Uttarakhand. Since the onset of the annual monsoon season in June, hundreds of lives have been lost due to floods and landslides across the nation.

Experts attribute the rising frequency, intensity, and impact of these disasters to the dual forces of climate change and poorly conceived development initiatives.
