RustDesk now supports true unattended remote access on Wayland

RustDesk now enables true unattended remote access on Wayland, a significant advancement for Linux remote desktop. This feature eliminates the need for manual approval from the remote machine for each session. The update also supports multi-monitor configurations. After initial setup, users can connect to the remote machine even when no one is present, including from the login screen after a reboot.

Currently, this unattended access is available as a separate preview build for x86_64 Debian/Ubuntu-based systems. Wayland support remains limited in several major remote desktop products. AnyDesk necessitates Xorg for incoming Linux sessions, while TeamViewer currently labels Wayland support as experimental for common desktop environments.

RustDesk seeks additional real-world testing before implementing unattended Wayland access as the default option. Once the implementation stabilizes, the company plans to expand this feature to more Linux distributions, including Fedora and Arch Linux, with eventual inclusion in standard RustDesk releases.

For Wayland users, particularly those with multi-monitor setups, the company encourages trying the preview build and providing feedback on its functionality and any issues encountered. RustDesk Server Pro now supports user-level Access Control Lists (ACL) and device groups, in addition to user groups. Due to Flutter 3.22 dropping support for Windows 7/8, the Flutter engine needs to be modified to restore support for Windows 7.

The V2 release brings enhanced codecs, international keyboard support, clipboard functionality, and file transfer capabilities. To install and run RustDesk on Linux, users can choose from .deb, .rpm, Flatpak, AppImage, X11, Wayland, headless, and unattended access options, as well as self-hosting the server.
