Reliance, Rolls-Royce partner to develop engine for India's fifth-gen fighter jet

New Delhi witnessed a significant development in India's quest for self-reliance in defense technology. Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce have partnered to develop the engine for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. This collaboration aims to create an indigenous high-thrust powerplant for the fifth-generation stealth fighter.

The engine development is crucial for India's defence sector as it has traditionally relied on foreign engines. Establishing a domestic engine manufacturing facility is a key step towards achieving greater defence self-reliance. The proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India will cover the entire engine lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, testing, production, and maintenance.

The partnership combines Rolls-Royce's extensive aero-engine technology with Reliance Industries' capabilities in technology, manufacturing, and project execution. Anant Ambani, executive director of Reliance Industries, emphasized that this collaboration would result in a self-reliant aerospace engine ecosystem, potentially becoming globally competitive in the future.

Rolls-Royce CEO, Tufan Erginbilgic, highlighted the company's century-long heritage in advanced engineering and its position in India's industrial sector. The partnership is seen as a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country.

While the announcement does not indicate a final engine contract or investment details, it paves the way for India to potentially develop an end-to-end domestic capability for combat engine development, from design to operational support. This move aligns with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming for greater control over critical defense technologies and reduced dependence on foreign suppliers.
