Ramaphosa calls for deeper SADC integration and health sovereignty

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for deeper regional integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), highlighting recent advancements such as the establishment of a free trade area and one-stop border posts. These initiatives have made it easier for the movement of electricity, goods, services, and people across the region.

Ramaphosa reflects on SADC's formation in 1980 as a symbol of moral solidarity that played a crucial role in advancing the struggle against colonialism and apartheid, and in fostering democracy in Southern Africa. While acknowledging the progress made, he stresses that significant work remains to achieve deeper political, social, and economic integration within the region.

Ramaphosa notes that the principle of solidarity has been the driving force behind SADC since its establishment. The bloc has been at the forefront of progress in Southern Africa, contributing to regional cooperation through the creation of the free trade area and the Southern African Power Pool, which facilitates electricity movement across member states.

He also mentions the introduction of one-stop border posts, which have reduced waiting times at some of the region's busiest crossings, further enhancing trade and movement.

Looking towards the future, Ramaphosa emphasizes the importance of health sovereignty for Southern Africa. With a population of over 430 million people, the region presents a substantial opportunity to expand pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing within its borders. He argues that increased investment in local production could reduce reliance on external suppliers, improve access to medicines and healthcare commodities, create employment opportunities, and enhance the region's resilience to future health crises.

Ramaphosa believes that a larger regional market would provide manufacturers with greater certainty, encouraging investment in pharmaceutical production, vaccines, and other medical products.
