Pune: School Buses Without Functional CCTV To Face Action, Safety Panel Warns

Pune school bus authorities have warned that buses lacking essential safety features, particularly functional CCTV cameras, could face severe consequences. At a recent meeting of the Pune district school bus safety committee, officials emphasized the need for compliance with safety regulations for vehicles transporting schoolchildren.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Darade stressed that CCTV cameras must be installed and operational in every bus carrying students. Inspectors will verify this during fitness certificate renewals, with non-compliant vehicles facing enforcement action.

Key recommendations include:

1. Schools and operators must complete police verification and medical checks for drivers and staff

2. Detailed records of appointments, verification, training, and medical certificates need to be maintained

3. For students up to Class 5, a female attendant or designated staff must accompany every trip

4. Vehicles must accommodate the needs of disabled students, with an adult often accompanying them

5. Schools should form transport committees to address parent complaints and submit monthly reports

Operators are also prohibited from charging fares exceeding a 10% range above or below the prescribed minimum fare. The police and transport departments will intensify inspections to ensure compliance with these critical safety measures.
