PSA: Claude Code now enables auto mode as default, Anthropic says

Starting today, Claude Code users will find Claude Code's auto mode set as the default permission setting. This change is implemented across Pro, Max, and Team user sessions, unless the user or an administrator has manually selected a different setting. Anthropic reveals that auto mode eliminates repeated approval prompts by employing a classifier to review each tool call for irreversible, destructive, or out-of-bounds actions.

If the classifier identifies a potential issue, Claude can attempt a safer alternative or request user permission. However, if the system repeatedly blocks actions, it will revert to manual approval.

As part of this update, Anthropic has ceased charging a limited number of extra tokens per tool call used by the auto mode classifier in recent weeks. The company conducted a study involving 1,053 paid testers, yielding promising results. The study shows that users caught 13.6% of dangerous commands through auto mode, compared to 89% success rate when operating in manual approval mode. Human performance, however, dropped to approximately 5% after 50 prompts, indicating that auto mode can significantly enhance productivity.

Despite the potential risk associated with auto mode, Anthropic advises users to exercise caution, particularly for production changes. Human review remains crucial, especially when dealing with sensitive tasks. The company emphasizes that while the auto mode may seem risky, it is likely the appropriate default for experienced users. Users are advised to establish a level of trust with coding agents before fully relying on auto mode.

Interestingly, Anthropic's decision aligns with a trend in the industry. OpenAI initially avoided implementing auto mode in its most advanced version of GPT-5.6, opting for an extra layer of caution. This development comes at a time when Apple is rolling out its latest wireless headphones, AirPods Pro 3, and the latest iteration of AirTags, which allow users to track keys, bags, and bikes using Find My technology.
